1940:In
compliance with the Soviet-German
Agreement of 1939, the Soviet Union
claims all the territories she lost
to her neighbors after WWI. As a
total surprise to the world, the
Molotov ultimatum to Romania is an
undeniable proof that she wants
more: the North of Bucovina with its
capital Cernauti, a territory that
had been the easternmost region of
the late Austrian Empire up to the
end of WWI. Three families, three
different ethnic origins, will have
their lives changed. Their children
are friends from childhood on: Hugo
and his sister Alba, of
Austrian/Czech parents, Igor the
Russian. This unexpected ultimatum
will achieve what the war could not
so far: separate them from their
great friend, Dinou the "pure"
Romanian, who lives in Bucharest.
Surprisingly the Germans decide to
repatriate all those of German and
Austrian descent. Hugo will leave
with his family for an unknown to
them "Great Germany" and make
acquaintance with the
national-socialist ideology, Igor
will become a citizen of the Soviet
Union and experience Communist
regime. Dinou alone remains in his
native country of Romania. In 1941,
Germany attacks the Soviet-Union
their former ally. As the war goes
on, Grisha has to join the Red-Army,
Hugo the German Army, and Dinou
becomes a Romanian officer. They are
virtual enemies now. But their wish,
deeply rooted in their hearts, is to
see each other again, once the
killing has ceased.
